Now, soul, speak, is it thus with thee? does thy peace go with thee just to the prison door, and there leave thee? Art thou confident thy sins are pardoned all the while thou art in health and strength, but as soon as ever the sergeant knocks at the door to speak with thee – as soon as death, I mean, comes in sight – do thy thoughts then alter, and thy conscience tell thee he comes to prove thee a liar in thy pretended peace and joy?

Does your peace and comfort depend on your temporal circumstances? Gospel peace transcends creature comforts. We know that we are at peace with God, our sin has been pardoned, and we have the promise of heaven. Affliction will test our contentment, but it cannot take it away from us if we are truly in Christ. As Paul says in Philippians 4:11-13, Christ will strengthen us to be content regardless of our situation.
