But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.

Proverbs 4:18-19 (ESV)

---

As unbelievers, we are fumbling around in the dark, unaware of the things that keep tripping us up, causing misery in our lives, and unable to see where we should be going.

Jesus fixes this.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

When we come to Christ, the sun rises on our souls. He illuminates all the sins plaguing us that we didn’t even notice. He gives us a light to walk toward, a direction, a purpose, and hope. As we walk down this path through our lives, his light gets brighter as the Spirit performs the work of sanctification. We may stumble sometimes, but remembering what it was like to be in darkness should cause us to run to the light!
