If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.
C.S. Lewis
---
One of the most powerful realizations I had in my journey toward Christ was that nothing in this world is satisfying. Have you ever felt this way? Once you get what you want, you find you desire more or something new; this is especially true of sin. Sin leads to more sin, and you never reach the bottom. Why is this? Why can’t we be content here?
Perhaps it’s because we were not made for this world. God created us to glorify him, so that is our soul’s desire; our attempts to fill that hole in us with earthly things are in vain. Jesus explained this to the Samaritan woman at the well when he said:
Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. - John 4:13-14
Once you’ve received Christ, you can finally be content, knowing that this life is transient and you are going to your true home in heaven. You’ll still have wants and desires for things in this life, but you can now see them for what they are: poor substitutes for the heavenly things you were made for.
