even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:4-6 (ESV)

Life to an atheist is simply a series of coincidences; our existence is a big cosmic accident. According to this belief, we have no purpose in this life, as we got here by chance, and everything that happens to us is random. This lack of purpose and meaning is why non-believers must constantly be distracted; they can’t sit and contemplate eternity because it will drive them to madness. If an atheist thinks deeply about their worldview, the logical conclusion they will reach is nihilism, the belief that life is pointless.

Compare this to the Christian view, where God had a plan for us before he laid the foundation of the world. We know we will die one day, but we also know we have work to do here on Earth. God created us for a purpose, and nothing happens randomly; it all happens according to his divine providence. We can contemplate our mortality without fear or anxiety because we have the certainty of a better life after death. Don’t distract yourself from these thoughts; meditate on them to measure and build your faith. When we can think about death with a sense of peace, it gives us a strength that the atheist will never know.
