All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

Have you ever noticed people picking and choosing what they want to follow from God’s word? It seems very common now for people to discard the things from scripture that don’t fit with their modern humanist worldview. Society has trained us to believe that we are all such unique, individual snowflakes, that we can create our own custom-tailored belief systems, and we don’t have to follow an “antiquated” religion that is thousands of years old. The issue is that, by doing this, they are effectively making themselves God by saying their morality is better than God’s. As the verse above says, ALL scripture is breathed out by God. You have to either take all or none; it’s not like a Chipotle where you get to walk down the line and build your own religion.
This verse also gets to the point of what scripture is for; it equips us to do good work and glorify God. These “build-a-religion” people invert this principle and make scripture serve them and their humanist ideals. God is not at the center of their world; they are. We have to be vigilant against this. Some things in the Bible are difficult to understand and may not fit with our culture today. However, the Word is supposed to change us; we are not supposed to change the Word.
