The reconciled sinner hath the advantage of Adam in his communion with God… Why else is the communion of husband and wife fuller than of friend and friend, but because the union is closer? God converseth with Adam as a friend with his friend and ally, but with the reconciled soul as a husband with his wife.

As reconciled believers in Christ, we actually have a closer union and communion with God than Adam and Eve did in the garden. God was separate from man in the garden but was his friend. Now we have become one with God through our mediator Jesus Christ. Jesus is one flesh with the church, just as a husband and wife are one flesh (Eph. 5). Just think about how much this reveals God’s love for us and how much he desired to have a relationship with us. The beauty in his gospel design is beyond words.
