Most of us are averse to being in financial debt, but how much do we think about our spiritual debt? We all came with a debt so large that we could never hope to pay it off in a thousand lifetimes, but Christ has offered us a clean slate; he only requires faith and obedience. It’s like when Paul offered to pay Philemon for anything that Onesimus might have done - “If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account” (Philemon 18). We now have a glorious Lord who has paid off our oppressive old master and freed us from his heavy yoke. This makes us wealthy in a much more important way than financially, and our gratitude for our liberator should be that much greater.
